When you have decided to renovate your house, add a pool or granny flat, there is a lot of planning to do. When you are deciding on what electrician to use, plumber and others, you want to use a reputable tradesman or brand. If you are installing an antenna, bathroom, extension or new roof, planning well will save you a lot of time and money.

There is a lot to understand and know when planning such a big project! Our team provide all the expert advice you would expect from one of the countries biggest glazing supply companies.

Deciding to install glass in or around your home throws up a lot of questions, such as:

What type of glass?
What thickness of glass?
Tinted or not tinted?
Double glazed?
Toughened Glass?
Laminated Glass?
Textured Glass?

Already it is confusing! To understand the important things to know when installing glass in or around your home you need to know what look you are trying to achieve, do your own research, speak to your friends who have features you admire or you can just go straight to the experts.

It is completely dependent on the particular use of the glass and the look you are trying to achieve, some of the common types of glass include:

Toughened safety glass

Toughened safety glass which is also known as tempered glass is up to five times stronger than regular glass.

Toughened glass is specially treated so that it will break into small, blunt pieces under pressure, making it much safer than shards of normal glass.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by an interlayer between its two or more layers of glass.Laminated glass will flex before shattering it is strong but not as strong as tempered glass

Toughened Safety Glass is used for frameless shower screens, and Laminated Safety Glass is used for Framed shower screens.

Textured Glass
Textured glass is a surface you can feel with you run your hand over it, it has a textured surface and comes in various designs to suit your taste. It can be used as a decorative feature and provide a level of obscurity due to the texture.

Textured glass is used for privacy, to create a feature or to separate spaces.

Sandblasted Glass

Sandblasting creates a frosted look in the glass which comes in various levels of opaqueness. You can also choose zero opacity for complete privacy but it still allows light to enter or even have etched designs that can create quite stunning features.

Sandblasted glass has multiple applications limited by your imagination.

Ask the expert!

When you are preparing to speak with a Glazier about your glass needs, you need to consider what the glass is going to do. For example is it decorative? Does it have a practical application? Is it for privacy? Do you want tinted glass?

The most important thing is to research, look around, consider your lifestyle and the look you are trying to achieve as well as your budget.

An experienced glazier or glass supply specialist will be able to guide you on the right choice for your home to achieve the look and outcome you want.
